Anton

Mechanical engineer, Industrial Group (Wellington)

Anton joined Aurecon's Industrial Group as a graduate mechanical engineer in 2006.

Anton is one who is clearly skilled in water – he has kayaked in New Zealand, Australia and Europe and now spends most of his weekends on “Go Nadd”, his water skiing boat. Anton is also a keen snowboarder.

We hit him with 10 questions, starting now...

Why Aurecon?

I saw Aurecon's advertisement for graduate openings on SEEK website and they offered the best graduate training option.

Share some project experiences

I've had some killer jobs. For the last year I have been working on big winery development projects. Before that, I spent three months on site at Huntly Power Station learning about how the new e3p gas power station works.

What's the mentoring system like at Aurecon?

Pretty good. The idea is your mentor will make sure you are getting a broad base of experience. I have a Building Services mentor. He's mainly looking to make sure that I'm getting a good balance of work. I found him approachable and I won't hesitate to ask him any other questions or directions regarding future career direction.

How supportive is Aurecon of your professional advancement?

They pay for your IPENZ membership and organise you a mentor to ensure that your program isn't repetitive.

Describe a typical day

Aurecon is pretty flexible with working hours which is excellent – eight hours a day and you have to be in by 9am. A typical day would involve sketching a rough drawing for the drafters, playing with a couple of spreadsheets, talking to the client and contractors on the phone organising tenders or site work.

What's on for your next rotation?

I'm dedicated to winery projects until after vintage in May 2008 and I hope to continue to develop my expertise on winery projects.

What's the work culture like where you work?

The Industrial crew has a really good culture. Everyone is pretty easy going so there is a bit of cheek that gets passed around. We had the highest turn-out for Movember.

What's the social life like?

The social club here does a great job. There are events every couple of months that are excellent, such as wine tasting, beer tasting and a casino night. There are beers after work every Friday also.

What do you hope to achieve over the next three years?

I'm going for CPEng in a few years. Aurecon is a good place to go for it because there are some young engineers around that already have CPEng who will help you out.

In three words, describe what it has been like working for Aurecon.

Pretty damn good.
