Structural design engineer (Singapore)
![]() |
Pei Nyuk joined Aurecon Singapore as a graduate structural design engineer in 2007 after spotting an advertisement in the paper. Originally from Sabah, Malaysia, Pei Nyuk has an interest in graphic design, particularly Photoshop. Pei Nyuk loves playing basketball and is an avid fan of Jay Chou. We hit her with 10 questions, starting now... Why Aurecon?
Aurecon is a multi-disciplinary international company that can give me opportunities to work in different places and with people from different countries. Share some project experiences
Currently I am working on the upgrading works of a shopping mall, hotel and office complex. This project is in the feasibility stage. I've been involved in the feasibility study for the addition of new floors on the existing 73-storey hotel and also on the five-storey shopping mall. Besides that, I'm also helping in the feasibility study of an additional annex block above the ground with existing structure in the basement. This A&A (additional and alteration) project is challenging. Another project I've been delegated is the repair works for 13 factories and one eating house. The repair works are on cracked existing slab, wall and ramp and the addition of steel canopies to the existing factories. What's the mentoring system like at Aurecon?
Before I can progress to be a project leader, I am required to assist in several projects which are led by senior engineers. This ensures that I know the standard procedures and processes before I can eventually lead a project on my own. How supportive is Aurecon of your professional advancement?
Aurecon provides technical and non-technical training for graduate engineers. This is really helpful in assisting with my career progress. The company provides stimulating training programmes that give me the foundation and opportunity to develop and grow further. Describe a typical day
On a typical day I'd run some software like MS Excel and design and analysis programmes. I also do some manual calculations for simpler design/analysis. Sometimes there will be meetings with the project team for project updates. As a graduate engineer, I spend a lot of time seeking help and clarification from other engineers. What's on for your next rotation?
I will be managing some smaller projects with guidance from senior engineers. What's the work culture like where you work?
My colleagues are friendly and helpful. Team work is important and I was easily accepted by my colleagues. Also, as mental and physical health are valued in the company, staff are encouraged to take adequate breaks and there are benefits such as free fruit twice a week and drinks and snacks are readily available in the kitchen. Are you involved in any committees?
Recently I attended a few lunchtime presentations organised by Aurecon which I found enriching. What do you hope to achieve over the next three years?
I hope to gain design and site experience in many areas, eg civil works, buildings, environment and foundations as this will help qualify me to be a Professional Engineer (PE) within the shortest timeframe. Also my work experience and contact with various Aurecon projects will greatly help me achieve my aim to be a PE in five years' time. In three words, describe what it has been like working for Aurecon.
Exciting, friendly and prospective. |
