Qatar Science and Technology Park named building of the year by leading European architects

23 September 2009

The Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP), was this month declared the building of the year at the 8th Annual Leading European Architects Forum (LEAF) held in Berlin.

Aurecon acted as structural, civil, facade, security and fire life safety engineers on this project. Designed by architects Woods Bagot, the aesthetically striking QSTP was acclaimed as Best Overall Building and Best Commercial Building.

Part of Qatar Foundation’s Education City, the QSTP hosts technology centres for some of the world’s top corporations including EADS, ExxonMobil, GE, Microsoft, Virgin Health Bank, Shell and Total.

QSTP, which also comprises a business incubator to commercialise Qatar Foundation’s strong investment in research, has a key role in generating opportunities for Qatar’s scientists and entrepreneurs by creating an international hub for technology-based business and fostering the country’s knowledge economy.

Aurecon’s Building team in Adelaide provided structural, civil and façade engineering for the project, and delivered staged documentation to assist in achieving the very tight timeframe.

Some key structural achievements included:
 27 m x 9 m clear span at podium level which required 3 m-deep steel transfer trusses
Stainless steel clad wave form roof which covered the main building and all key walkways
Purpose-designed 3.5 mm thick perforated stainless steel cladding system
Future-proofed podium structure which was designed to support a variety of superstructures.

“This is fantastic achievement as we continue our involvement in world class facilities,” said Aurecon Project Leader John Dyson.

The LEAF awards night honours architects designing buildings and solutions that are setting the benchmark for the international architectural community.

Previous winners have included architects the likes of Zaha Hadid, David Chipperfield, SOM, Steven Holl and Terry Farrell.

This award comes shortly after the 2008 Middle East Architect Awards where the QSTP was declared Completed Project of the Year and received a Commendation at the South Australian Engineers Australia Awards.
